| Tarnished Earth Exhibition in Swansea.... |
|
On display in Swansea 8th to 26th October 2011 Tarnished Earth, a dramatic open air gallery of photographs by Jiri Rezac, telling the story of one of the world’s biggest ecological disasters, is coming to Swansea.
The free outdoor exhibition, which shows how Canada’s magnificent Boreal Forest is being destroyed and polluted by the rush to extract oil from the tar sands just below the surface, will be on display outside the National Waterfront Museum for much of October. The wonderful photographs, which are illuminated at night, contrast the destruction caused by the oil extraction with the area’s pristine wilderness and the traditional way of life of the indigenous First Nation Cree.
Tarnished Earth, organised by The Co-operative Group in conjunction with WWF-UK and Greenpeace, is touring the UK and has already been seen by more than a million people. It is being hosted in Swansea by the National Waterfront Museum and Swansea Environmental Forum (SEF) as part of the Sustainable Swansea Initiative, with support from the Environment Centre and the City and County of Swansea.
This is the latest in a series of major outdoor exhibitions that the Forum has brought to Swansea to raise awareness of global environmental issues. A key priority for SEF at the moment is to encourage and help local organisations and communities to lower their carbon footprint. A dramatic exhibition like Tarnished Earth can show what can happen if we continue to depend on ever diminishing supplies of oil.
Two FREE films linked to issues raised by the exhibition will also be shown: Dirty Oil 5.30pm, Sunday 16th October, National Waterfront Museum A documentary that takes a behind-the-scenes look at the tar sands industry. Gasland 7pm, Tuesday 18th October, National Waterfront Museum A multi-award winning film about the impact of natural gas drilling in the USA and the controversial method known as ‘fracking’. Followed by a short open discussion.
